“Year of the Horse” series 2014-2015

In the year 2014- according to the Chinese Lunar calendar was the year of the horse. It’s considered a strong and challenging year based on the characters and elements of the horse. Among the elements and characters that can be seen through history in the country during the last years of the horse are as follows: –

1882 Wan Ahmad as the first Sultan (Sultan Ahmad Al-Muazam Shah) in the state of Pahang. Loyalty
1894  War in Jeram Ampai, Pahang caused many death among nationalists who against the British Fight
1906 State of Kedah Has abolished forced labor practices and land tax payments on the people. Fair
1918 The opening of the railway plant in Padang Besar has linked the railway track in Thailand. Open policy
1930 The Friendship Agreement between the state of Perlis and the British was made to clarify the position of the Perlis state and separate with the state of Kedah. Indepandent
1942 Federation of Malaya was taken by the Japanese. Challenge/ difficulties
1954 Mersing, Johor declared as a white area, free from the threat of communism and the free community of doing business, agriculture and so on. Freedom
1966 Diplomatic relations with neighboring countries such as Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. Friendship
1978 Development of transportation and economic systems. Development
1990 Promoting the arts and culture of the nation Creative

Therefore, every year the horse has a real horse element. We as Malaysians should have a high spirit, do what is best for ourselves and others even though the challenges will arise unexpected. Let us Malaysians unite for achievement and progress!

P.Ramlee Series 2015 – present

Malaysian lagendary P. Ramlee (22 March 1929 – 29 May 1973) was a Malaysian film actor, director, singer, songwriter, composer, and producer.  Due to his contributions to the movie and music industry and his literary work, which began with his acting debut in Singapore in 1948 to the height of his career and then later moving to Malaysia in 1964 onward where he moves towards his decline and death, he is regarded as a prominent icon of Malay entertainment; with his famed even reaching as far as Brunei and Indonesia as well as in Hong Kong and Japan.

The tribute exhibition was held at the Museum of Asian Art, University of Malaya in 2015 and “Lagenda P. Ramlee” at NU Sentral, Kuala Lumpur in 2016.

“Keluar Lumpur”, Al-Aqsa “Form of the DOA” 2014

Every artist given a piece of aluminium sheet debris from the Al-Aqsa mosque to create a piece of work. I choose to melt the aluminium sheet and cast it into a hand punch wrapped with mud.

“Keluar Lumpur” is the symbolism of the hand in the release of suction of the mud. Mud is a mix of soil and water which in Malay “tanah and “air” means nation – into a viscous and sticky and hard to get through or escape from that if stepped on, and may be killed if he stepped into a hole in mud. For me, the people of Palestine is under the suction of mud, and they are working hard to get over this difficult challenge. Here I wish to say that people in Kuala Lumpur and the nation are concerned about them. Therefore, this work is so significant among us, urge all to be out of scope in order to help, to give prayer and seeking the miracle that will happen. The element of arabesque is being used as a form DOA which symbolized as a hope.


7. GOLD SHAFT SERIES (2013-present)

After concentration in a series of La Root is more synonymous with the mining of tin, I’ve started a new series of Raub which widely known in gold mining activities. Raub is a district and town in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. Gold mining started in 1889 by William Bibby under the Raub Australian Gold Mine (RAGM). Malay word “raub” means “scoop” which according to J.A. Richardson in his book, The Geology and Mineral Resourses of the Neighbourhood of Raub, Pahang, page 36, “People found that for every “dulang” (tray) of sand there was a handful (raub) of gold”. As a result, Raub became very famous in early of 20th century for its mining resource (gold). In the piece “Gold Shaft I,II,III,IV and V” show the abstraction form of gold mining techniques in Raub “shaft mining”. In the other side, the bamboo that I used itself were growth originally in Raub. Gold Shaft I and II exhibited at the “Art Monaco’14”, Monte-Carlo, Monaco. Gold Shaft III exhibited in conjunction of Kuala Lumpur International Jazz Festival. Meanwhile, Gold Shaft IV in Awarded “Collective” by Biancoscuro Art Magazine which will be held September 7, 2014 at the exhibition space BIANCOSCURO in Pavia, Italy,  while Gold Shaft V exhibiting at Galeri Chandan, Kuala Lumpur for the “Pulpa Exhibition”.

6. La(Root) Series (2012-2013)

This series further explores and highlights the contributions made by Kapitan Chung as well as Ngah Ibrahim and prominent figures from the Indian community of Taiping, resulting in many landmarks achieved since 1860s. The idea of many races living together harmoniously, especially after the Pangkor Treaty in 1874, has similarity to the 1 Malaysia aspects. The achievement in Larut is trying to relate to the nowadays which  is the continuity that started in Larut. The La(Root) solo exhibition was held in G13 Gallery in December 2012. Some of the works were exhibited in “MOYA Annuale- Young Art Global 2013” in MOYA- Museum of Young Art, Vienna, Austria and became their collection.

Chinese Kapitan family portrait is the discovery of the heirs and historian of the Taiping. Various visual literacy can be seen through the portraits. There are three main issues of education could only be given by the elite, traditional clothing adapted to the local culture and technology to record the events of the camera. Everything has changed in the present age in which education is equal, very rare traditional clothing worn by the Chinese and the camera affordable to all people.
