6. La(Root) Series (2012-2013)

This series further explores and highlights the contributions made by Kapitan Chung as well as Ngah Ibrahim and prominent figures from the Indian community of Taiping, resulting in many landmarks achieved since 1860s. The idea of many races living together harmoniously, especially after the Pangkor Treaty in 1874, has similarity to the 1 Malaysia aspects. The achievement in Larut is trying to relate to the nowadays which  is the continuity that started in Larut. The La(Root) solo exhibition was held in G13 Gallery in December 2012. Some of the works were exhibited in “MOYA Annuale- Young Art Global 2013” in MOYA- Museum of Young Art, Vienna, Austria and became their collection.

5. PRIDE OF THE PORTRAIT SERIES (2010-2012)

Chinese Kapitan family portrait is the discovery of the heirs and historian of the Taiping. Various visual literacy can be seen through the portraits. There are three main issues of education could only be given by the elite, traditional clothing adapted to the local culture and technology to record the events of the camera. Everything has changed in the present age in which education is equal, very rare traditional clothing worn by the Chinese and the camera affordable to all people.

4. KAPITAN SERIES (2010-2011)

Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee is the founder of the Taiping modernization. He was a millionaire and he constantly renewing the way to mine tin in Larut, Perak. He is also involved in agriculture, pawning and logging. He is well-known and influential among the Chinese and European, especially British. He is also the head of the Chinese secret society Hai San and in the other han, Chin Ah Yam was the head of Ghee Hin society . According to Perak’s history that has happened three times in a fight between the two societies. The first fighting took place in 1861 which is water source problem during mining activities. The second fight was from gambling in 1865 and the third was in 1872 due to scandal attorney by the name of the Ghee Hin Lee Ah Kun with his wife of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee. Of historical facts, we should realize that we live in a family. The value of understanding, cooperation and solidarity should be practiced by the community to be developed and peaceful country.

3. FORTUNE SERIES (2009-2011)

Fortune is the series which inspired by the idea of television program “Wheel of Fortune” and “Money Wheel” in which the main message to be delivered in connection with the monopoly and competition for land in Larut (Taiping now) by two secret societies:- Ghee Hin and Hai San. Only a very lucrative rewards given to winners only. So all sides either quarrel or fight each other to get the first prize. At the same time, this work is also related to gambling has existed since the 18th century in Malaya until now still active as the latest technological developments in the short messaging system (SMS). This series had obtained several awards such as Insentive Award by the “Galeri Shah Alam Open Show” in 2009 for “The Fortune I” piece and later became the permanent collection of National Visual Arts Gallery NVAG, Malaysia. “The Fortune II” were awarded Consolation Prize for the “Johor Visual Art Competition” in the same year. Meanwhile, “The Fortune IV” were selected in “Excellent Young Artist- Malaysia 2010” in Penang State Art Gallery.

2. PROSPECT SERIES (SCULPTURES) (2008-2009)

Penang developed rapidly in the industrial and technological revolution. Although the current Penang rapid technological developments, but the origin of the Penang based heritage, culture and history is maintained and not changed. In addition, the merger of technology in society has resulted in standards development and the achievement of higher and ever expanding from time to time. Society is always at the front in pursuit of progress is not only locally but internationally. Sculptures motive is from the “Pinang” tree where the state name is given. It is an honor to the state because it is an icon or identity to reflect the state of Penang. In addition, physical icons are courageous and strong, it is appropriate holding represents heritage, culture and history of strong and so there is continuous national unity. Preservation of culture in this country is very encouraging. It is continuous and in line with current technological developments. “The Prospect I” awarded 2nd Prize for “Penang The One Sculpture Competition 2008”. Meanwhile, “The Prospect III” were the finalist in the “10th Oita Asian Sculpture Competition”, Japan in 2012.

1. EVERLASTING PEACE SERIES (2007-2009)

Everlasting Peace is the name of a district of Taiping in Perak after happened three times of war between two secret societies (Ghee Hin and Hai San) in 1861, 1865 and 1871. According to history, the Taiping are very rich in tin. Many immigrants from China were brought in to undertake the activity of mining between 1860-1870. Everlasting Peace series is to see a comparison of the factors that can occur upheaval of society in the colonial British and the present. Moral values ​​should be adopted by each society and community to progress and world peace.

Liu Cheng Hua, Malaysian Emerging Young Artist
